There are many buzzwords or trends in the nutrition world. Some are just that- trends like a specific diet trend or a 1-way super food that will fix everything– think about it, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is… that and if it is promising some type of magical cure. Most of these trends are either unsustainable, unhealthy or unattainable. The promise is empty and no one thing is going to be a cure all. It is not as simple as that.
As much as I love my superfoods, there is no one thing that will fix everything!
So what about phytonutrients? Trend or not?? DEFINITELY NOT!
Phytonutrients are the compounds in your plant foods that cause that vibrant beautiful color… when we say “eat the rainbow” we not only think of the basic benefits of fruit and vegetables such as fiber, vitamins and minerals, but now we know about thousands of these phytonutrients also known as phytochemicals found in plant products. These phytonutrients are found in plants and are the protective factor while the plant is growing. More to it, the organic plants have even more powerful phytonutrients than conventionally grown (we will talk lots about the benefits of organic versus conventional throughout this blog). When we consume plants, we also consume phytonutrients, which do amazing things in our body. We are only finding out the brink of what phytonutrients can do, and to be honest, if you do not do anything else, make sure to eat your phytonutrients everyday– upwards of 10 + varieties to get all these amazing benefits… I know I said if it sounds like magic, it does not work, but hey, this sounds pretty magical to me and backed by science.
Benefits of Phytonutrients:
- Act as antioxidants to keep body in balance to decrease oxidative stress
- Protect against lifestyle diseases and certain types of cancer
- Communicate with good bacteria in gut to positively alter microbiome (think just as important as probiotics, or MORE!)
- Anti-inflammatory property
- Boost immune support
- Promote healthy aging and longevity
- Support hormone balance
- Promote gut health
How to Consume Phytonutrients:
Eat a plant-based diet!!
All plant foods- fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts, beans/legumes contain powerful phytonutrients. Some are more powerful than others. A good rule of thumb- the more potent, pungent or bitter, the more phytonutrients it consumes.
Eat these as many times a week as you can:
- Turmeric
- Ginger
- Oregano
- Grapefruit
- Cruciferous veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, arugula, kale
- Garlic
- Onion
- Acai, blueberry, raspberry
- Cherries
- Tomatoes
- Pomegranate
The list goes on and on! Next time we will dive into the classifications of phytonutrients and the importance of each. Remember, variety is key and the more phytonutrients you consume, the more you will have synergy!
Until next time!
Nutritiously yours,
Jennifer Nicole
